Internet of Things (IoT) Community announces dates for inaugural IoT Master Class series

Inaugural Master Class Series to focus on IoT Security, Privacy and Trust

Series forms part of IoT Community’s Security, Privacy & Trust IoT Center of Excellence (SPTIoTCoE) domain expertise initiative

Raleigh, North Carolina, May 2, 2019 The IoT Community® (Internet of Things Community®), the world’s largest community of corporate executives, IoT professionals and practitioners, today announces the 2019 master class panel of cyber and security industry experts and academics who will provide input and peer reviews in developing best practices for IoT standards and real-world use cases. These classes will be offered to our IoT Community members throughout the year – free of charge and form part of more IoT Community Master Classes that will be announced across vertical and industry application areas of enterprise, industrial and consumer IoT.The timing of this announcement comes in response to the unexpected, yet welcomed developments that transpired at The IET’s Living in IoT conference on May 1, 2019 , in which the IoT Community attended and presented at – and in which Government Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, Margot James MP, also attended and spoke at, revealing proposals for a new Consumer IoT law; which attempts to ensure and validate consumer IoT device security through the use of an IoT label. Minister James, also responded to key IoT Community questions, relating to the proposed plans to incorporate privacy and trust into the label; and responded to how the government was planning to mitigate risks and threats to critical infrastructure, posed by IoT.

The summer SPTIoTCoE session commences:

  • June 4, 11:00am – 2:00pm central CST – Dr. Chase Cunningham, Principal Analyst at Forrester Research Inc.: Zero Trust architecture
  • July 10, 11:00am– 2:00pm central CST Mike Saylor, President & Co-Founder of Cyber Defense Labs and university Professor:  loT criminal/forensic best practices.
  • August 6, 11:00am – 2:00pm central CST Jeff Schmidt, CEO for identity assurance company Authomate: IoT privacy issues.

We are extremely excited to bring this initial series to our members.” Said CoE co-chair Nancy Shemwell “The ability to learn from leading executives in the cyber industry is just one more value we are delivering to our membership. We aim to expand this curriculum with additional sessions to be announced later this year. With the news that came out of the UK yesterday at the IET Living in IoT conference, it is great to hear grass-roots IoT Community concepts – like the IoT Facts label, which BoA member Tamara Dull introduced to the IoT industry may now come to bear”.

Kevin Grant of the IoT Community, was a presenter at the Living in IoT event, outlining why IoT takes a village. During his presentation, Kevin discussed how to apply IoT Security best practices to realize international mutual benefit, for common efforts to deter and thwart cyber criminals – and the harm they seek to do to consumers and society.

We concur with Minister James, that consumer IoT Security is an area that needs significant attention to ensure the safety and protection of critical infrastructure, ensuring such devices do not get compromised to create a giant bot-net army, which could have dire consequences, and harm the UK’s national interest. Our SPTIoTCoE Master Class aims to provide guidance and best-practices to IoT security right, across industrial, enterprise and consumer IoT landscapes. We look forward to sharing the best of the best practices for global audiences to learn from and apply“ Kevin Grant, IoT Community Founder.

IoT Community Announces Formation of Security, Privacy & Trust IoT Center of Excellence (SPTIoTCoE) as Part of its Domain Expertise Initiative

Security, Privacy & Trust Center of Excellence will engage industry thought leaders to enable community learning, best practice sharing, and provide actionable guidance for IoT security practitioners

RALEIGH, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The IoT Community® (Internet of Things Community®), the world’s largest community of corporate executives, IoT professionals and practitioners, today announced the formation of its security, privacy and trust focused IoT Center of Excellence (SPTIoTCoE), which will be Co-Chaired by Nancy Shemwell, Chief Operating Officer of the IoT Community and Dipto Chakravarty, Chief Technology Officer at Exostar. Ms. Shemwell previously served as the Chief Executive Officer at the cybersecurity firm, Vericlave, and currently serves as Chair of their Board of Advisors. Serving as Vice Chair of the CoE is Jason Cook, Managing Director at the Chertoff Group.

“I am honored to announce the formation of our SPTIoTCoE, and proud to work with industry experts Dipto and Jason,” said Ms. Shemwell. “Our charter is to provide meaningful, actionable IoT security input to established security frameworks and standards, provide industry master classes, use-cases, and best practice advice. This CoE will bring together a team of security icons whose knowledge in the Security, Privacy & Trust IoT domain will add a strong voice to the ever evolving effort to secure the IoT networks.”

The IoT Community also has established its 2019 master class panel of industry experts and academics who will provide input and peer reviews in developing best practices for IoT standards and real-world use cases, with classes offered to IoT Community members throughout the year.

  • Mike Saylor, President & Co-Founder of Cyber Defense Labs and university Professor: loT criminal/forensic best practices.
  • Jeff Schmidt, CEO for identity assurance company Authomate: IoT privacy issues.
  • Adam Isles, Principal at The Chertoff Group: Building an effective IoT framework leveraging MitreAtt&ck™ TTP.
  • Mark Weatherford, SVP & Chief Cybersecurity Strategist at vArmour: 2019 legal and regulatory IoT environment.

“As the digital revolution is now upon us we are at an inflection point where lots of wonderful technology is being created, but counter to this is a significant increase in security risk,” states Mr. Cook. “Our CoE is creating value by providing a continuous feedback loop into the design, production, application of IoT with the intent that we make ‘things’ more secure. The CoE aims to collectively endorse, leverage and enhance security protocols and standards such as Mitre Att&ck, NIST, and Zero Trust frameworks.”

The initial areas of coverage that form the SPTIoTCoE pillars of excellence are:

  • Security, Privacy & Trust Provider Strategy
  • IoT Security
  • IoT Privacy
  • IoT Trust
  • Security, Privacy & Trust Investments via VC-JV-PE (Venture Capital, Joint Venture, Private Equity)

Bringing home the need for thought leadership in this area, Mr. Chakravarty states, “As the scale of the Internet of Things continues to grow exponentially and becomes orders of magnitude larger than the Internet of Users, the impact of the power shift to the edge in today’s password-less economy becomes increasingly profound. IoT’s single lens view creates a ‘Wild West’ operating environment filled with insecurity, zero trust and the potential for private data leaks that’s downright scary. These are the challenges our Center of Excellence is addressing. It is imperative for organizations to join us as we collectively must define and adopt best practices for security, privacy and trust in the new era.”

“Security, privacy and trust issues remain the primary concerns and barriers to widespread IoT / IIoT uptake. Today we are delighted to announce the formation of our SPTIoTCoE, to be led by industry veterans in Nancy, Dipto and Jason, bringing deep domain expertise and know-how, to create a framework that can provide a solid pathway for cyber and IoT security practitioners, providers and institutions implementing IoT products and services, to get security right – instilling trust in consumers, and enterprises that the IoT is real, privacy issues can be tamed, and ultimately it can be made safe and secure,” said David Hill, executive director, IoT Community.

The SPTIoTCoE will provide thought leadership content on https://iotpractitioner.com; will conduct a master class program and will participate in other IoT Community events including this year’s IoT Day Slam 2019 (April 9, location virtual, www.iotslam.com) and the IoT Slam Live (June 19 – 21, R.T.P North Carolina USA, www.iotslam.com).
