Retail IoT

Retail IoT Center of Excellence (RIoTCoE)

From shelf to doorstep—accurate, efficient, and trusted retail operations.

Executive Summary

The Retail IoT CoE is a practitioner-led forum where store, supply chain, digital, and security teams co-create proven patterns for modern retail. We publish reference architectures, playbooks, evaluation suites, and audit-ready evidence to help retailers lift on-shelf availability, reduce shrink, accelerate omnichannel fulfillment (BOPIS/click-and-collect/ship-from-store), optimize energy and refrigeration, and improve employee and customer experience—safely and at scale.

Who We Serve

  • Store & Field Ops: store managers, district leaders, loss prevention/asset protection, facilities, and energy managers.
  • Digital & Omnichannel: heads of e-commerce/omnichannel, last-mile and micro-fulfillment leads, customer experience/loyalty teams.
  • Technology & Data: retail architects, POS/OMS/WMS owners, edge platform teams, data/ML engineers, computer vision leads.
  • Security & Compliance: CISOs, privacy officers, PCI DSS owners, risk/audit leaders.
  • Leadership & Partners: COO/CIO/CTO/CMO, strategy and merchandising, OEMs/integrators/ISVs, standards bodies, academia.

Charter & Objectives

  1. Inventory Accuracy & OSA: raise inventory accuracy and on-shelf availability with RFID, CV shelf-gap detection, and closed-loop replenishment.
  2. Shrink Reduction & LP: reduce theft, scanning fraud, and returns abuse with privacy-preserving analytics and targeted interventions.
  3. Omnichannel Efficiency: shorten promise-to-pick-to-handoff SLAs for BOPIS, curbside, and ship-from-store with predictable cost.
  4. Checkout Modernization: improve self-checkout (SCO) completion, lower interventions, enable mobile/scan-and-go with guardrails.
  5. Energy & Refrigeration: meet food safety and ESG targets via smart refrigeration, HACCP logging, and comfort-energy optimization.
  6. Experience & Conversion: better allocation, queue management, real-time offers, and digital signage that respects consent.
  7. Governance & Safety: policy-as-code, human-in-the-loop approvals, rollback, and audit evidence built in.

Scope

Store sensing (cameras, RFID/ESL, scales, beacons), private Wi-Fi/5G, edge CV, POS/OMS/WMS/CRM integration, micro-fulfillment, last-mile orchestration, refrigeration and HVAC monitoring, privacy/consent, PCI DSS and data minimization.

Focus Pillars

  1. Inventory Accuracy, RFID & Shelf Truth
    – What: RFID cycles, smart shelves/ESLs, CV shelf-gap detection; reconcile with POS/OMS.
    – Why: accuracy and OSA drive sales, pick success, and returns reduction.
    – Starter outcomes: >95% inventory accuracy pilots, automated replenishment tasks, “ghost stock” reductions.
  2. Loss Prevention & Return Integrity (Privacy-Preserving)
    – What: CV for SCO item swaps/skip scans, receipt/return validation, exception routing; privacy via on-device redaction and minimum necessary data.
    – Why: shrink erodes margin; targeted interventions beat blanket friction.
    – Starter outcomes: SCO intervention rate ↓ with conversion preserved; returns abuse ↓, policy evidence ↑.
  3. Omnichannel Pick/Pack/Handoff
    – What: slotting, pick paths, staging, curbside orchestration, locker/dispatch; promise accuracy and staffing optimization.
    – Why: speed and accuracy win loyalty and reduce rework.
    – Starter outcomes: ready-for-pickup SLA ↑, substitutions ↓, cost/order within target.
  4. Checkout Modernization (SCO & Mobile)
    – What: SCO guardrails, mobile scan-and-go, age-restricted flows, assisted checkout modes, dynamic staffing.
    – Why: balance speed, shrink risk, and CX.
    – Starter outcomes: SCO completion ↑, interventions ↓, age-verification latency ↓.
  5. Refrigeration, Food Safety & Energy
    – What: case temperatures, door/defrost cycles, compressor health, HACCP logs, HVAC comfort-energy balance.
    – Why: safety, compliance, and lower energy per square foot.
    – Starter outcomes: temperature excursions ↓, HACCP audit readiness ↑, energy intensity ↓.
  6. In-Store Experience & Experimentation
    – What: traffic/queue analytics, labor allocation, digital signage/offers, A/B tests; loyalty/CDP with consent.
    – Why: conversion and AOV lift without creepiness risk.
    – Starter outcomes: queue wait ↓, AOV/UPT ↑, experiment velocity ↑ with privacy guardrails.
