IoT Masterclass – Industrial Asset Management and the Pursuit of Efficacy, Efficiency, and Safety: A Holistic Approach

Abstract:

Management of industrial assets is an ever-evolving discipline, where it is essential to meet the requirements of the fast-changing industries and markets. How can we find the optimal balance between maximizing production value, ensuring safety and compliance, and minimizing maintenance costs? What solutions and analytical tools are available? How can we perform simulations leveraging IT-OT integration? Among a plethora of options and infinite combinations, the role of a Systems Integrator is key to putting it all together and building a platform that supports an Enterprise to take critical decisions.

IoT MasterClass – PKI and how to use a private certificate authority for device authentication and data integrity

    Abstract:

In 2021, so far there has been a 500% increase in IoT attacks compared to 2020. IBM Security X-Force research has revealed that this spike is driven by Mozi botnets. In 2020, this malware has accounted for 89% of the total IoT attacks of all types detected for the year. Mozi has been active in the last 18 months and continues to rank as the number one most active Mirai-type variant. The Mozi Botnet currently controls approximately 438,000 hosts [1]

How do device makers, IoT platforms and service providers protect themselves?

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is well known for it’s standards for cybersecurity with its CyberSecurity Framework likely the most influential. NIST  has released its IoT Device Cybersecurity Capability Core Baseline (NISTIR 8259A) in May 2020. It provides details what is expected in an IoT cybersecurity baseline. It includes such imperatives as device identification and configuration, data protection, logical access to interfaces, and the ability to have awareness of its cybersecurity state.

In this presentation, we shall explore best practices for meeting this baseline and extending it to include appropriate protection brownfield devices in the field that do not have inherent defenses against cyber-attack. We will go into great detail on:

    1. How to protect device identities and provide additional authorization capabilities at the edge using PKI
    2. How to protect data from generation to consumption in Zero Trust Network Architectures

He brings over 30 years of experience in bringing breakthrough products to market at a massive scale and is a named inventor in Digital Rights Management (DRM), Internet of Things (IoT) and virtual SIM technologies. Before joining Intertrust, Julian brought SaaS and PaaS products to market for construction telematics and real time cyber risk analysis at TeMeDa and CyberLucent respectively, taking both companies to profitability from initial seed funding startups. At Qualcomm Julian led product security; virtual SIM development; child tracking sold as Best Buy’s “Little Buddy”; and the company’s first efforts in IoT doubling revenue year on year for the first three years and catalyzing what is now a billion-dollar business. Prior to that, he was the technical lead for Nokia’s first music phone. Julian holds a B.Eng from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, an MBA from the University of Southern California (USC) and is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP).

IoT MasterClass – 5 IT capabilities that are a must for IIoT success

            Abstract:

Industrial environments are evolving faster than ever. This evolution is being forced by supply-chain issues, shorter new product introduction cycles, growth requiring maximum uptime, cybersecurity threats, pandemic mandated operational changes, sustainability needs, and digitization initiatives improving the products and process continuously. Organizations can either let these challenges disrupt them or they can tackle them head on by leading with technology and digitizing their business, freeing data securely, to support the agility required. Current operational networks, however, are not ready for new explosions of data this evolution is producing or ever evolving cyber threats. To survive and thrive, organizations must enhance their networks to support Industry 4.0, allowing them to leverage operational data to boost productivity, improve products, and drive growth.

Operational networks – including devices and their management – must therefore step up and deliver on vital requirements of scalability, availability, reliability, performance, visibility, and end-to-end security – the same requirements that enterprise networks have been challenged with and solving over the past several years.

In this session, we will discuss five enterprise-grade capabilities that together with industrial-strength robustness can make industrial IoT deployments successful, increasing operational effectiveness and production agility, while reducing cyber security threats and addressing the widening skills gap

            Presenter Bios:

Working in the IoT networking group at Cisco, Vivek’s responsibilities include marketing of Cisco’s IoT switching portfolio and how it can help customers in various industry verticals modernize their operating networks in their quest for digitization and adoption of Industry 4.0 principles. Prior to IoT, Vivek managed marketing of parts of Cisco’s enterprise portfolio including Cisco DNA Center, Software-Defined Access solution, among others.

Paul Didier, Solutions Architect, Cisco. He is a results-oriented, technology leader with expertise in developing and managing solutions, efficiently operating the underlying infrastructure, and successfully leading teams and organizations. He has extensive experience working on projects in many international corporations in nearly every major industry across the globe and is experienced in leading large teams of experts. Paul is an effective communicator with the track record of driving industry-wide transformations through technical innovation and cross-organizational collaboration. Over the last 5 years, Paul has been central to Cisco’s initiatives around the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). He lead a team of Solution Architects for Manufacturing, Oil & Gas, Transportation, Utilities and Public Sector. He drives the technical collaboration with a range of key “Operational” technology partners, such as Rockwell Automation, National Instruments, Schneider Electric, Bosch and others.
